Production Designer Hiring – Full Process in Detail 

Director ke Vision ko Samajhna

  • Sabse pehle Producer ya Director ek experienced Production Designer se milte hain.
  • Director batata hai ki film ka tone kya hoga — realistic, stylized, period-based, fantasy, dark, colorful, grounded, etc.
  • Jaise: "Yeh film 1980s ke Bihar pe based hai, aur mujhe ek raw aur authentic visual chahiye."

Previous Work & Portfolio Check

  • Production Designer ka past ka kaam dekha jata hai — unki films, ads, webseries ka look kaisa tha.
  • Kya wo alag-alag genres handle kar chuka hai? Period, sci-fi, village drama, urban love story etc.

Hiring ke Baad Pehla Kaam – Look Design

  • Designer script padhta hai aur visual imagination start karta hai.
  • Har scene ke liye dimaag me ek visual world create karta hai.

Uske baad banata hai:

  • Moodboard – Visual reference images ka collage
  • Set sketches / layout plans
  • Color palette – kis scene me kya rang use hoga
  • Props ka design – Purani kursi, antique phone, typewriter, etc.
  • Location ideas – Kya yeh real jagah pe shoot ho sakta hai ya set banana padega?

Art Department ki Team Build Karna

Ek Production Designer apni core team hire karta hai:

Role Kaam
Art Director Day-to-day art team ko manage karta hai
Set Designer Sets ka 3D layout aur drawings banata hai
Set Dresser Set pe har choti detail (books, photos, vases) arrange karta hai
Props Master Film me use hone wale physical items ka in-charge
Construction Manager Set banane ke liye carpenters aur workers organize karta hai

Budget Ke Saath Balance Karna

  • Designer ko Producer ke diye gaye budget ke andar kaam karna hota hai.
  • Agar ₹1 crore ka set design chahiye par budget ₹25 lakh hai, toh:
    • Alternatives dhundhta hai
    • Set ke kuch hisson ko reuse ya cheat karta hai
    • Props rent karta hai instead of buying
    • Local vendors se cheaper raw material leta hai

Location Visit aur Set Planning

  • Designer location scout team ke sath visit karta hai.
  • Real locations me kya add karna hai, kya hataana hai — yeh decide hota hai.
  • Agar set banana hai, toh space ka measurement lekar studio me set plan karta hai.

Coordination with Other Departments

Production Designer ko in sab departments ke saath close coordination rakhna padta hai:

  • DOP (Cinematographer) – Lighting aur framing ke hisaab se set design optimize hota hai
  • Costume Designer – Character ke kapdon ka rang set ke background se clash na ho
  • Sound Designer – Wooden ya metal set elements ki sound effect ka impact
  • Makeup Team – Actor ka look background me blend ho ya pop out kare

Pre-Production Execution Start

  • Jab design approve ho jata hai, toh:
    • Set construction start hota hai
    • Props collection / rental ka kaam shuru hota hai
    • Wall painting, ageing, detailing hota hai (taaki set natural lage)
    • Shooting se pehle har element set pe tayaar hota hai

Example:

Agar film ka ek scene purane zamane ki police chowki me shoot hona hai, toh:

  • Designer ek brick wall wala set banata hai
  • Wooden desk, purana fan, black rotary phone, purani jail ki iron bars use karta hai
  • Sab pe dust aur rust ka effect deta hai taaki authentic lage
  • Lighting aur camera test ke baad final touch deta hai
